Over the last 50 years, American Christian churches have deliberated about codifying gender inclusivity within church policy.  For example, in 1985 The United Church of Christ urged its congregations to “declare themselves Open and Affirming.”  Open and Affirming (ONA) is an official designation of congregations and other settings in the UCC affirming the full inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and non-binary persons (LGBTQ) in the church’s life and ministry.

After the Supreme Court declared same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states, James and Kent took their vows in a UCC church. James said, “It was important to bring together our community of friends, family, and church members to recognize our commitment to each other.  We wanted to do that in the presence of God.  We loved sharing this ritual in a sacred space with the organ and formal wear and a feeling of reverence.”

Kent added, “We were thinking of hopping on a plane to Puerto Vallarta with just our closest circle, and getting married there.  But then we thought, no, this is the perfect opportunity to raise up all the people who have always loved us for who we are. Let’s have It in our church with our friends and our minister.”

Navigating Controversial Topics with Compassion and Respect
